ENCINITAS, CA- After months of debate, the state Coastal Commission staff has endorsed plans for a CONDOMINIUM HOTEL project instead of a full-time hotel above Ponto State Beach, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Planners were concerned that allowing privately owned condos on the 4.3 acres would deprive the public of access to the coast, but concluded it would not.
They are recommending that the commission approve construction of 130 hotel rooms on the west side of Coast Highway 101 at La Costa Avenue on condition that the units serve as hotel rooms when condo owners aren't occupying them. The owners could stay in their units a maximum of 90 days a year.
The 12-member Coastal Commission will be asked to make the final decision today.
Construction could begin as early as next fall, said Doug Yavanian, a spokesman for property owner KSL Encinitas Resorts. KSL Corp. also owns La Costa Resort and Spa.
The estimated $50 million to $75 million Encinitas Resort Hotel would be set up just like a hotel, with desks for checking in and out, KSL officials have said.
